Driving uninsured: £300, six points, and an IN10

Driving without valid insurance carries a £300 fixed-penalty fine and six points on your licence. If it goes to court, fines are unlimited and disqualification is on the table. The IN10 conviction stays on your driving record for four years and is the single biggest premium driver going forward; some insurers will not quote you at all.

The other risk is the one nobody talks about: if you drive on a lapsed policy and crash, your insurer will not pay out. You are personally liable for the third party's vehicle, injuries, and any business losses they pursue.

Why fleet insurance lapses are the easiest to forget

  • Auto-renewal is not always on. Many commercial vehicle policies disable auto-renew by default, especially after the FCA's general insurance pricing rules. The renewal letter still arrives, but the policy will end if you do not act.
  • The renewal date is whatever the policy says. Unlike MOT and tax (which are tied to the vehicle), insurance renewal is whenever you bought the policy. If you have ten vans bought at ten different times, you have ten different dates.
  • Premiums go up at renewal. Operators who do not shop around overpay by 15-25% on average. Set a reminder, get a quote, save real money.

How Fleetkeep handles insurance dates

Insurance is the one renewal date Fleetkeep cannot pull from a public API (the Motor Insurance Database is not public). You enter the policy expiry date once when you add the vehicle. Update it each renewal. From then on, the same reminder cadence applies: 60, 30, 14 and 7 days before expiry.

If you keep the dates in a spreadsheet today, our CSV import will read them in bulk. One column per vehicle; we will figure out the format.

Car insurance reminders for business vehicles

Fleetkeep also works as a car insurance reminder for businesses where a "fleet" might be two cars, a pickup and a van. Enter the renewal date against each vehicle and the dashboard keeps it next to the MOT, road tax and service dates. The reminder emails help you compare or renew before cover lapses, without pretending to replace your broker or insurer.

Compare and save when you renew

When the 30-day reminder hits, that is the moment to shop. We are integrating with UK comparison partners so you can compare commercial vehicle insurance from inside the dashboard at renewal time. If you use a partner link, Fleetkeep may earn a referral fee. Your reminder plan and fleet data are separate from those partner links. Read the full pricing page.

Insurance dates that sit outside DVLA data

You do not need a fleet manager to stay insured. You need to know the date, get a reminder before it, and have a clean way to compare and renew. That is the whole job. MOT reminders and road tax reminders work the same way, same dashboard, same email cadence, same audience.
